Podcasting, So, what is all this podcasting talk about?

The latest buzzword in the world of portable media is podcasting. However, little people know what the word stands for or how it can change the way that they access portable media. That's why we're here to help!

Podcasting refers to a technology that would allows media, like MP3 files, to be accessed in a way that would allow software to detect the addition of new media on the Internet. The MP3 files would be linked to through something called a podcast feed, which is a list of links updated by the publisher of the media. A podcast is essentially a constantly updated list of links to new MP3 files.

What is so appealing about podcasting, you ask? The major upside to podcasting is the ability to program the download of new media that you may be interested in. For example, a podcast feed for comedy clips may suddenly contain new files pertaining to "Dave Chappelle". You would program your podcasting aggregator to download new files found by your podcasting feed, resulting in a collection of new found media that is waiting for you when you want it.

Similar technology to podcasting is used in the world of blogging. New blog posts are made available through an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. The feed is accessed by other blogs that are interested in the content published by the blog hosting the RSS feed. When new blog posts are detected in the feed, the websites linking to the RSS feed would automatically "pick up" the new posts and show them on their website or personal news page.

Where will podcasting go next? We believe that the technology has a far way to go before the Internet sees the full potential of podcasting. One thing is for sure - audiophiles will benefit!
